A 6.46 carat Tiffany & Co diamond ring was the centrepiece sale at Sotheby's recent Important Jewels auction in New York.

In total nearly 500 lots were sold for a total of $10,535,821, marking the third consecutive record total for a February sale of jewellery at the auction house.

The market's appetite for premium diamonds was proven by two sales: the 6.46 carat Tiffany diamond ring, which sold for $560,500, tripling its high estimate, and a .51 carat pink diamond ring which quadrupled its high estimate in going for  $338,500.

Other top lots included a platinum and diamond bow brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels that went for $332,500, above a high estimate of $100,000.

“We are very pleased to have achieved another top result for our February sales in New York,” said Gary Schuler, Head of Sotheby’s Jewellery department in New York.

The auction also included a number of jewels from the collections of Estée Lauder and Evelyn H. Lauder.
